You describe your symptoms and history to a psychiatrist or psychologist. They'll ask about childhood, school, work, and relationships. This is the foundation of the assessment.
You'll complete standardised rating scales (typically Conners, DIVA, or ASRS). Some clinics also request a collateral questionnaire from a family member or close friend.
Higher-cost assessments often include cognitive testing (IQ, memory, processing speed) to rule out other conditions and provide a fuller picture. Not all ADHD assessments include this.
You receive a written report confirming or ruling out ADHD, with a recommended treatment plan. This report can be used to access workplace accommodations, medication, and supports.

Yes. A private diagnostic report from a registered psychiatrist or psychologist is fully valid for workplace reasonable accommodation requests under the Employment Equality Acts. Employers cannot require HSE-specific diagnoses.
Psychiatrists are medical doctors who can prescribe medication. Psychologists cannot prescribe but can conduct psychological testing. For ADHD, either can diagnose — but if you want medication immediately after diagnosis, a psychiatrist-led assessment is more efficient.
