Why one headline price can mislead

Two quotes can look different while covering different work. One may include background forms, individual testing, verbal feedback, a detailed report and a follow-up call. Another may cover only a screening appointment. Compare the service line by line before comparing the total.

A screening can help identify whether further assessment may be useful, but it is not automatically a diagnostic assessment. Ask the provider to state clearly what conclusion, documentation and recommendations the service can provide.

Dyslexia Ireland also says reduced-fee support may be available for people on social welfare or low incomes, with an application required alongside referral paperwork. Eligibility and availability should be checked directly.

Seven things to check in a private quote

1. Initial review: Are forms, records and the referral question reviewed before the appointment?
2. Assessment time: How much direct assessment is included, and could extra sessions cost more?
3. Professional responsibility: Who conducts, supervises and signs the work?
4. Feedback: Is a verbal explanation included for the person or family?
5. Written report: Is a full report included, and when will it be delivered?
6. Recommendations: Will recommendations be relevant to school, college or work?
7. Aftercare: Is a follow-up clarification included, and what is the complaints or correction process?

Ask the receiving organisation first

If the report is intended for a school, college, examination process or workplace, ask that organisation what current documentation it requires. Do this before booking. A provider should not promise that one report automatically secures a particular accommodation, grant or examination arrangement.

Further and higher education students can contact their disability or access service. Dyslexia Ireland notes that such services may be able to help students organise an assessment. The available route will vary by institution.

Waiting time has a cost too

Dyslexia Ireland's page reports an approximately 18-month wait for new applicants, dated September 2025. Other services may have different availability. Ask separately for the expected appointment date and the expected report date. If the need is time-sensitive, tell the receiving organisation now; do not assume support must wait until a formal report arrives.

For a child, the Department's NEPS model emphasises early assessment, planning and intervention through the school's Continuum of Support. Practical school support can begin and be reviewed while a referral or assessment question is being considered.

Can the fee be claimed as a health expense?

Dyslexia Ireland says tax relief may be claimed on its assessment fee as a qualifying psychological assessment expense and directs readers to Revenue. Tax treatment depends on current Revenue rules and personal circumstances. Divergent.ie cannot determine eligibility, so check directly with Revenue or a tax adviser and retain the provider's receipt.

Before paying a deposit

• Get the provider's name, qualifications, full scope and total fee in writing.
• Confirm deposit, cancellation and rescheduling terms.
• Ask what happens if the assessor cannot reach a clear conclusion.
• Confirm how personal and school records will be stored and returned.
• Check whether online or in-person delivery is suitable for the referral question.
